At the very beginning of 2002, in the newly renovated Gallery 2 of Ujazdowski Castle, the Centre for Contemporary Art opened a permanent exhibition of its International Collection of Contemporary Art, ten years in its completion.

Partial stages of the collection’s creation, incomplete and fragmentary, were presented at temporary exhibits in the years 1992, 1994 and 1996/1997. The fourth collection is comprised of interesting artwork of the last forty years and is almost entirely a summary of the nearly 600 exhibitions held at the Centre for Contemporary Art since 1990. In a way, it is a complete review of the trends, attitudes and practices in the modern art of recent years.

The Centre for Contemporary Art’s collection contains several hundred works of 150 artists and is international in its nature, though the major stress had been placed on Polish works. The present exhibition acquaints visitors with the work of 76 artists, representing the various media currently employed in the creation of art: painting, sculpture, drawings, photography, installations, video, performance art, multimedia projects and others. The work testifies to the diversity of artistic movements. The paintings themselves reveal many different and intriguing varieties, each being represented by an eminent artist. Minimalist works or those analysing their own medium of expression are also part of the exhibition – concrete poetry can be “read” and a conceptual form contemplated. The collection is a precise sketch, which adds to the hole image of contemporary art and allows for better understanding of the wealth of its references, subjects and directions. In the presenting the art of famous artists, it encourages a sense of trust in modern art, which is often misinterpreted due to its surprising forms.

The exhibiting of the collection has two objectives: first and foremost, to present the greatest individuals in contemporary art, and secondly, to provide an up-to-date insight into art. Many artists and glimpse of the whole scope of art can be seen.

The exhibition is the fourth presentation of the collection at Ujazdowski Castle. It is planned to be permanently on display, though selected pieces will successively be exchanged. The collection is to actively react to exhibitions taking place around it. The exhibition of the Centre’s fourth collection is Poland’s largest international presentation of modern art as well as being the country’s biggest art lesson.

The collection of the Centre for Contemporary Art is also accompanied by the the exhibition The Foksal Gallery Deposit presenting the work, chosen from 200 works of art in the gallery’s collection, of 15 artists who had been guests of this “cult” gallery. Many of the names are common to both exhibitions. This exhibition will be open until February 2002. The simultaneous opening of these two exhibitions is proof of the communication between these two important cultural institutions, the style of which, conditioned in part of their scale, offers an interesting comparison. Two different models of presenting art can also be compared.

Each of the exhibitions separately, as well as in confrontation with each other, evokes many questions: what a collection is, how the “face” of art influences its perception, how institutions “work” with art and many others.
