MAURYCY GOMULICKI (LEFT) AND MAREK GRYGIELThe triptych of Maurycy

It is important for a gallery to report about current work of its artists. This was a characteristic trait of the Mała Gallery from its very beginning and we still are trying to maintain this tradition today.

After two consecutive exhibitions of Maurycy Gomulicki in 96 and 97 (both were presented in the month of January) we present his third exhibitions in January 1999. Apparently these exhibitions have nothing in common except the artist himself. The first of the exhibitions was a deceitful pondering upon "youth and death" and elusive beauty of the world. The second exhibition enriched with special sound composition of Robert Nizinski was a statement about "interchangeability of space". The current exhibition is an attempt to "seduce" our imagination by the way of photographed world of mannequins, the world of certain mystery and of symbolism not fully comprehended. This exhibition which completes kind of a triptych of presentations gives us better understanding of the direction of Maurycy Gomulicki's quest.

It is not difficult to notice that the focal point of the first two presentations was an attempt to find a language which would help to translate a world of forms and shapes into world of imagination and open interpretations of natural phenomena. The present exhibition is instead a search after a language that translates the world of culture.

We are being confirmed by "sentimental typologies" to which Maurycy Gomulicki submits the phenomenon of mannequins - recalling associations with the prose of Bruno Schulz. "There, in the depth of the matter vague smiles acquire their form, tensions set up, attempts of shapes condense"*. That is what Bruno Schulz writes in his "Treatise on mannequins". This "condensation" is also apparent in the work of Maurycy Gomulicki. Such a world created in pre-war eastern Little Poland can be discovered 70 years later on other hemisphere in Mexico. It will still fascinate us with its amibiguity. And will enable us to introduce order into the world of forms and shapes once more. With a burden of everything what happened in the time between.
